Whether you’re setting up a gas bottle for the first time or just need a quick refresher, getting it right matters. A correctly connected gas bottle helps your appliance run safely and reliably — and avoids unnecessary problems later on.
With the right regulator and a few simple checks, setting up a gas bottle doesn’t need to be complicated. This guide walks you through how to connect and disconnect gas bottles safely, with clear steps for patio gas, propane, and butane bottles commonly used across the UK.
If you’re ever unsure, our team is always happy to help.

Before You Get Started: Important Safety Checks
Before connecting any gas bottle, take a moment to check the following:
Make sure the appliance is switched off
Check you have the correct regulator for the bottle
Ensure the bottle valve and regulator connection are clean and undamaged
Never connect or disconnect a regulator while the gas is switched on
Always use gas bottles in well‑ventilated areas
If anything looks damaged or doesn’t feel right, stop and seek advice before continuing.
Setting Up Patio Gas (Clip‑On Regulator)

Patio gas bottles use a 27mm clip‑on regulator and are commonly used for BBQs and patio heaters.
Before Connecting
Confirm you have a 27mm clip‑on regulator
Check the top of the gas bottle valve is clean
There is no protective cap on patio gas bottles, so cleanliness is important
How to Connect
Make sure the regulator switch is in the off position
Place the regulator squarely over the bottle valve
Press down firmly until you hear a clear click
Turn the regulator switch anti‑clockwise to switch the gas on
After Use
Turn the regulator switch clockwise to the off position
Always turn the gas off when the appliance is not in use
How to Disconnect
Turn the regulator switch to off
If the flame does not go out, leave the appliance running and seek advice
Press the release button and lift the regulator off the bottle
Setting Up Propane Gas Bottles (Screw‑On Regulator)

Propane bottles are commonly used for home heating, hot water, caravans, and business use. These bottles use a screw‑on (bullnose) regulator.
Before Connecting
Check the bottle valve is clean and undamaged
Ensure you have the correct regulator
Have a suitable spanner ready
How to Connect
Turn the bottle valve clockwise to ensure it is fully closed
Remove the protective plug from the valve outlet
Check the regulator connection for damage
Screw the regulator nut onto the valve anti‑clockwise
Tighten firmly using a spanner — secure but not forced
Turn the bottle valve anti‑clockwise to switch the gas on
How to Disconnect
Turn the bottle valve off (clockwise)
Wait until all burners or pilot lights have gone out
Never remove the regulator while the gas valve is open
Use a spanner to loosen and remove the regulator
Replace the protective plug into the valve outlet
Setting Up a 4.5kg Butane Gas Bottle

A 4.5kg butane bottle uses a screw‑on regulator with a sealing washer.
Before Connecting
Check the regulator washer is present and in good condition
Replace the washer if it appears worn or damaged
How to Connect
Turn the bottle valve fully off
Remove the protective plug
Check the sealing washer inside the regulator
Screw the regulator nut onto the bottle anti‑clockwise
Tighten firmly using a suitable spanner — do not over‑tighten
Turn the valve anti‑clockwise to release gas
How to Disconnect
Turn the bottle valve off
Wait for flames to go out completely
Use a spanner to remove the regulator
Replace the black safety cap onto the valve outlet
Setting Up 7kg or 15kg Butane Gas Bottles (Clip‑On)

Larger butane bottles use a 21mm clip‑on regulator.
Before Connecting
Check you have a 21mm clip‑on regulator
Never disconnect while the regulator is switched on
How to Connect
Ensure the regulator switch is off
Place the regulator onto the bottle valve
Press down firmly until it clicks into place
Turn the switch anti‑clockwise to turn the gas on
How to Disconnect
Turn the regulator switch off
If a flame does not go out, seek advice
Press the release button and lift the regulator off
Fit the safety cap onto the empty bottle
If Something Doesn’t Seem Right
If:
You smell gas
The flame won’t go out
A connection doesn’t feel secure
👉 Stop, turn the gas off if safe to do so, and seek professional advice.
Never force a regulator or connection.
